Troy Wright Pinta, Pharm.D.

Emergency Medicine Pharmacist, Clinical Professor of ER Medicine | Lee Memorial Health System

Troy Wright Pinta, PharmD is an accomplished educator whose expertise in the pharmaceutical field, especially emergency medicine, has culminated in more than two decades as a university professor, pharmacist, and health professional throughout the state of Florida. He’s excelled as an emergency medicine clinical pharmacist at Lee Memorial Health System—a nonprofit health system in which he works closely with health care providers in emergency care and provides vital medical drug information and acute critical care pharmacotherapy—since 2012; as the chief executive officer at Sports & Wellness, Inc.—aimed at creating a healthier lifestyle in the community through “preventative sports wellness” and without sole reliance on medicine—since 2014; a clinical instructor at Lecom College of Pharmacy since 2015; and a clinical instructor at the University of Florida since 2016. In the latter positions, he takes pride in sharing his knowledge with aspiring pharmacists and caregivers.

Dr. Pinta attributes much of his success to the values and experiences he gained growing up and observing his family run a health care-centered business on Pine Island, a small, working-class fishing community. Unlike the more developed resort areas nearby, Pine Island was modest and often overlooked. In that tight-knit environment, his family served as one of the few accessible sources of health care knowledge, providing essential support to locals and helping them determine whether they needed hospital care or could manage their conditions with available resources. This early exposure to community service and responsibility deeply influenced his own commitment to making a meaningful impact in health care.

Upon completing coursework in environmental biology at the University of South Florida, Dr. Pinta went on to study at the Nova Southeastern University Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy, where he ultimately graduated with high honors, ranking in the top 5% of his class, and earned a Doctor of Pharmacy in 2000. He subsequently served as an adjunct professor at Florida Southwestern State College, teaching pharmacology to dental hygiene and nursing students and accepting minimal compensation as genuine passion for teaching and the personal fulfillment it brought motivated him, and as a staff speaker at Pfizer from 2000 to 2004, and launched his career as a clinical instructor at Nova Southeastern University in 2001, a teaching position he holds to this day. He additionally found success as the director of pharmacy at Optioncare of SWFL from 2001 to 2007, a clinical pharmacist at U.S. Infusion and Family Health Management between 2002 and 2006, and a clinical instructor at Palm Beach Atlantic University. From 2007 to 2012, he served as an internal medicine clinical pharmacist at Lee Memorial Health System.

Outside of his primary endeavors, Dr. Pinta was active as a radio talk show host with ESPN from 2009 to 2022, where he and his co-hosts discussed the game of golf, provided tips, and took viewer calls during their show “Play Golf,” and has long been involved in several civic endeavors, including contributions as a member of the Florida Society of Health System Pharmacists Inc. and previously serving on the board of organizational affairs for the Florida Pharmacy Association. Beyond this, he’s also volunteered with the Arthritis Foundation, offering educational talks to patients in brown bag format; these sessions focused on discussing the effectiveness and risks of various medications, helping patients better understand their treatment options. His involvement extended to a psoriasis support group, where he also shared his pharmaceutical expertise to support those managing chronic conditions.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Pinta strives to continue building on the progress he has already made in the pharmacy profession. Having achieved many of his initial goals—particularly in bridging the gap between pharmacists and physicians—he remains committed to advancing the role of pharmacists in health care. He believes pharmacists have long been over-trained and underutilized, and his focus moving forward is to further enhance the visibility and value of pharmacists, especially in clinical settings. He’s additionally passionate about educating future pharmacy professionals, instilling in them a strong sense of purpose and pride in their role. In turn, he takes pride when students on his campus frequently encounter high levels of engagement from physicians, a testament to the collaborative culture he and his colleagues have fostered.

Happily married with a daughter, Dr. Pinta enjoys hunting, fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family in his free time.
